We Become Color

Epal Gallery Reykjavík, 2023

Sigrún Hrólfsdóttir shows new works painted on canvas and silk. The aesthetics of the works are determined by the artist's personal perception based on color theory, symbolism and the meaning inherent in materials and forms. The paintings are made with water-soluble oil and acrylic colors and avoid classical composition. The interplay between colors and forms is an adoration of their visual and subjective effects. The works made with dyes on silk are characterized by simple lines and color surfaces that highlight how the color interacts with the silk threads and the delicate fabric.

The title of the exhibition is a speculative idea on the form of life in the future when our existence will take place in multiple dimensions. In this way, the works also indirectly refer to the digital dimension that surrounds us and captivates with its great color glory.

"While I work on the paintings, I focus on certain concepts or feelings and try to connect with inner visions that appear to me in dreams, memories or meditation. I focus on these abstract concepts, but gradually the painting itself takes over and I try to follow it where it wants to go."

In this way, it can be said that each work is a trip where colors and forms are set off, and the destination is where the artist decides that an aesthetic balance has been reached. Intuition and visual perception being the guiding principles. The mediums as such also play an important role in the works, both materially and in an art historical sense as they are in conversation with a rich tradition.
